Manager, Business Development

The primary function of this position is to support Business Development (BD) on behalf of the agency. You will identify, foster, generate, and secure new business contracts with nonprofit, brand, and individual social impact clients. Specifically, this position will support the development of strategic plans, identify and conduct proactive and reactive outreach to prospective clients, pitch PD’s services, develop proposals and contracts, and ensure the smooth transition of new work to the client team.

Key responsibilities include:

Project Management

Manage the department’s progress against the work, set priorities, and identify opportunities to create efficiencies.

  • Manage work across the BD team (which may include client services and central office team members) against timelines and prospective client priorities.
    • Set priorities and executable timelines of BD work, manage competing priorities, and actively update and adjust plans as appropriate.
    • Identify opportunities to create efficiencies in BD work.
  • Develop and manage a system to closely track, monitor, and manage prospective new clients and projects within the BD pipeline.
  • Manage all BD scheduling and meeting preparations.
  • Support management of BD third party vendors.
    • Work with leadership to identify needs, source, and secure third party support to complete BD work or projects and set appropriate budget in line with project budget.
    • Support the development of third party vendor contracts, agreements, and scopes of work, appropriately leveraging templates and working with the Operations team, when needed.
    • Support management of BD third party vendors against project work and ensure proper payment.
  • Develop, manage, and track all BD budgets and revenue targets and provide regular report-outs to relevant BD stakeholders, direct manager, and leadership.

Execution

Manage the department to effectively complete the work to meet internal and client expectations.

  • Execute against BD strategy as defined by EVP, Strategy & MarComms.
  • Work with a cross-departmental team to develop and create social impact pitches and proposals.
    • Ensure that appropriate team members contribute to and/or approve scopes of work that are in alignment with our offerings and capabilities.
  • Develop prospective client pitches, proposals, RFPs, decks, and recommendation emails and ensure that they clearly articulate research-driven rationale, impact-driven frameworks, achieve prospect goals, and are easily understood by the client.
    • Ensure all team members participating in BD work have all needed information, context, documents, and updates to complete their work effectively and efficiently.
    • Ensure all work developed meets Propper Daley’s quality standards including proper grammar, proper formatting, integrity, and originality and aligns with clients’ industry best practices and standards.
  • Draft client contracts that leverage templates, systems, and processes, are in-line with revenue goals, and allow for success in execution and fulfillment.
  • Support the successful handoff and onboarding of new clients and projects to the internal team by ensuring the full client team understands the goal of new clients, the scope of work, and any other background information to be able to execute successfully.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Demonstrate relevant issue knowledge to gather insights and proactively develop creative solutions, tactics, and strategies, and understand the implications of choices in order to leverage the team to collaboratively solve potential problems.

  • Support the development of executable and creative BD strategies.
    • Conduct market research and understand the needs of brands, philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofits to support strategic decision-making and idea development.
    • Continuously build an understanding of business (including offerings, capabilities, past and current projects, etc.) to ensure all proposals, pitches, and contracts are aligned with business capabilities.
    • Leverage network and conduct research to develop a strategic and evolving pipeline of new clients based on new markets and areas for growth.
    • Identify new business offerings and work with leadership to evaluate and implement.
  • Manage the development of strategic proposals and pitches to prospective clients.
    • Conduct research and transform insights into strategies, tactics, and recommendations for prospective client proposals.
    • Ensure developed strategies and proposals are appropriately adjusted and managed against internal and client feedback to achieve both internal and client priorities.
    • Identify potential issues in BD work early on, develop creative solutions, and understand the implications of choices in order to leverage the relevant team members to collaboratively solve potential problems.
  • Actively participate in post mortem meetings and develop plans for implementing learnings across BD work to drive efficiency, create a more seamless workflow, and increase impact.
  • Support efforts to grow Propper Daley’s knowledge, work, and brand.
    • Help shape the external corporate narrative including mission, vision, values, services for website and marketing materials.
    • Continuously grow and apply knowledge of client issue areas and the larger social impact industry.
    • Share relevant industry and issue articles with the Propper Daley team and clients to advance social impact and client-specific knowledge.
    • Support the development of thought leadership opportunities to further Propper Daley’s brand as time allows, including, but not limited to: Drafting thought leadership pieces, identifying and attending conferences, drafting case studies, drafting whitepapers, or sharing relevant news/trends/insights with the agency.
  • Support the development of a scalable BD practice including templatizing materials (including capability decks, scopes of work, etc.) and streamlining processes and systems.

Communication

Act as the main point of contact for the department internally and externally (with clients, partners, consultants, etc.) to ensure consistent alignment across deliverables.

  • Develop and execute a regular and proactive cadence of communication with prospective clients and internal departments.
    • Manage and facilitate all incoming BD requests and perform proactive outreach to identified prospective clients.
    • Manage and own internal communications for the BD team, across both Client Services and Central Office, ensuring consistent alignment across the work.
    • Act as the main point of contact with prospective clients and other external stakeholders, including partners, and consultants.
  • Effectively communicate the agency’s vision, mission, and theory of change to all stakeholders.
  • Provide internal departments clear and informative updates from prospective clients that allow them to execute their work efficiently and prepare for new contracts.
  • Manage and lead prospective client presentations by assigning roles and responsibilities, leading preparations, managing and executing delivery, and tracking and managing next steps.

Leadership

Manage across and support the growth of the department, and manage up to supervisor to ensure success of work.

  • Participate in a positive and inclusive agency culture and work environment by building and supporting the development of productive and positive working relationships with and between all team members.
  • Proactively seek opportunities for training that advances social impact knowledge and skills.
  • Manage across members of the BD team and up to leadership to ensure success of client work.
    • Conduct performance evaluations for direct reports as needed and as required.
    • Provide support to new team members through onboarding to ensure the success of the BD work.
  • Provide superior client service to support securing of new client contracts.
