Vice President, Strategy & Research

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Propper Daley seeks a Vice President, Strategy & Research to join its Senior Leadership Team and oversee critical aspects of its transformative work in the social impact space. Reporting to the Co-Head of the Social Impact Practice, the VP, Strategy & Research will be responsible for leading the research and strategy team. The VP, Strategy & Research will work collaboratively across all levels of the organization and lead a team of researchers and strategists to oversee all aspects of client research, from developing research plans to evaluating findings, identifying further lines of inquiry, and surfacing relevant insights and areas of opportunity for our clients. Further the VP, Strategy & Research will develop frameworks and theories of change to guide clients’ social impact strategies, ultimately establishing trusting relationships with clients to share key findings and recommendations in order to influence and inform actions.

Based in Los Angeles, this position is ideal for an experienced strategy professional with strong analytical capabilities, creativity, and a bias for action in delivering on the core work of the agency.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research

  • Lead the process to explore an area of client interest and identify the information needed and questions to be answered in order to develop programs, partnerships, campaigns and impact initiatives; conduct landscape analyses on key issues as needed
  • Develop lists of key stakeholders and experts to interview for relevant client interest areas; develop questions and conduct interviews; synthesize information and insights; cultivate relationships or further introductions as needed
  • Become deeply familiar with behavioral science principles and be able to leverage insights across all client work; prioritize measurement and impact analysis in both research and evaluation of client engagements
  • Lead creation of client-facing research deliverables (decks, memos, etc.) including both overseeing the research and strategy team’s content creation and making individual contributions
  • Identify opportunities to codify structures and systems in strategies and deliverables, and , knowledge discovered in research that can be deployed across future clients and organizational initiatives
  • As applicable, source and engage external, expert consultants and manage their work

Strategy development

  • Leverage research, analysis, interviews, internal expertise, and institutional knowledge to identify opportunities for clients in their area(s) of interest
  • Craft and articulate strategic recommendations, taking into account client goals, strengths, available assets, and key gaps/opportunities in their field of interest
  • Develop and lead strategy workshops with clients focused on gathering pertinent information or making important decisions
  • As the organization grows, strategically build, lead and manage a high-performing strategy and research team

Client engagement and partnership cultivation

  • Develop a sophisticated understanding of client needs and relevant social issues, and identify potential partners with whom to engage in order to advance those needs
  • Present to clients across all stages of the work, from initial meetings to key deliverable presentations and strategy workshops; answering any client questions that arise, either directly or via email, regarding the substance and strategy of the work.
  • Represent the agency to both internal and external stakeholders; creating briefing materials for potential partners articulating clients’ work, vision and the partnership opportunity (and vice versa for clients on any proposals received).
  • Through strategic outreach and engagement, cultivate meaningful partnership opportunities based on clients’ specific visions and goals (e.g., donations, sponsorships, join programs, campaigns, cause-marketing partnerships, and other activations)

Business development

  • Support on strategic ideation around potential clients, based on their issues of interest and strengths
  • Participate in business development meetings with high-priority targets assisting in the development of proposals in collaboration with the Head of Business Innovation
  • Identify potential thought leadership opportunities for the agency and support in cultivation and execution
  • Develop client case studies or thought leadership pieces, to be leveraged for agency brand-building; present in public fora as appropriate

Propper Daley is looking for an engaging and enterprising executive professional with the aptitude to thrive in a dynamic organization and be a key thought leader in advancing the social impact field. Candidates should have:

  • Minimum 10+ years experience, ideally in senior leadership cross-functional roles that required strong strategic competencies and decision-making; prior experience in impact consulting a plus
  • An ability to balance creativity and outside-the-box ideas with pragmatic execution
  • Experience leading research in innovative contexts
  • Demonstrated history of interfacing with clients and other high-level stakeholders with an ability to distill complex, abstract ideas to a diverse range of audiences
  • Superior communication skills; ability to influence and inspire others; to translate new, complicated concepts to unfamiliar and diverse audiences
  • Expertise in identifying, building, and maintaining partnerships and developing programs
  • Excellent strategic insight and analytical ability
  • Experience executing and seeing projects through from inception to success
  • Superb presentation skills and an ability to develop accompanying keynotes/powerpoints
  • Ability to effectively work with a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team; comfort working across various levels in an organization
  • Experience leading, managing, and coaching a strong team of direct reports
  • A meticulous approach to project management; prior experience with Asana preferred
